Greg and Bryan’s 12 Days of Christmas (Teacher and Tech) Deals – Day 2

DAY 2:

Greg’s Teacher deal of the day – If you thought the Flip video camera was cool, how about a pen with a camcorder built in. Imagine grading all those essays over the Christmas holiday and developing carpal tunnel so bad you can’t open presents. Who needs that? Just whip out the old camcorder pen and record video and audio of your comments. Also a perfect gift for students. They’ll never have to pay attention in class again!

This thing has 4GB of memory (28 hours of recording time) and works as a USB memory stick. Imagine, a USB memory stick disguised as a camcorder, disguised as a pen!

The 12 frames per second videos will be somewhat like watching security footage from a convenience store robbery but if you want better video plunk down $100 and buy the Flip video cam I mentioned yesterday.

My free download of the day:

Everyone has a digital camera right? So everyone also has thousands of pictures that they have no idea what to do with. Why night make a cool slide show and share it with your family and friends. “That’s too hard” you say. Not with Microsoft’s Photostory. Make a slideshow like the pros with a few clicks of the mouse. (Please, no comments from Mac users about how Mac has this functionality built in and solves global warming at the same time!)

If you don’t want to download software, try Animoto. The free account allows you to create videos up to 3 minutes I think (which is about 2 minutes and 45 seconds longer than people want to watch). For Iphone users, there is a free Animoto app to make slide shows from your phone.

Bryan’s Tech deal of the day:

Tired of tiny little point and shoots? Ready to call yourself a true photographer? Take a look at the Cannon Powershot SX120.This camera is in between a point and shoot and a DSLR. It’s got great zoom (10X), and at 10 megapixels you’ll be able to crop to your hearts content. It also has optical image stabilization so no more shaky hand shots. It also has a really handy feature for group photos. It will detect when the number of faces in a shot has increased (i.e. you the camera person have stepped into the frame) and then take the picture after two seconds allowing everyone to be in the photo. I can also use two types of media, XD and MMC, which is rare. Ready to hear the price?

Free download of the day:
Since we’re apparently on a photo/video binge, have you ever wanted to do some serious photo editing but don’t want to pay the $80 for Photoshop Elements (don’t even get me started on Photoshop CS4)? GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) will do everything Photoshop will do and then some. It’s even compatible with all the Photoshop brushes. There are also a lot of tutorials for it so if you know basically what you want to do there is probably a tutorial for it. What’s really neat (if you want to be hardcore GIMP) is you can script for it. You can write a script to do multiple things to a picture all at once. All this for FREE. They even make a installer for flash drives so you can take GIMP where ever you go.
